Advocacy
The aim of the Western Australian Centre for Health Promotion Research
Advocacy team is to enhance links with and to foster the participation
of health and education practitioners and communities in decision
making for effective health promotion and healthy public policy
through advocacy. The team also strives to support and improve the
exchange of health promotion knowledge and research practices through
active dissemination strategies as well as through national and
international networking.
The Advocacy team has contributed to the development of numerous
public health initiatives, especially in Western Australia. These
initiatives have been related to drink driving, traffic safety,
bicycle helmets, 40 km/hour zones, skin cancer prevention, firearm
control, smoke detectors, tobacco smoking and control policies,
alcohol and other drugs in the workplace and school health promotion.
Much of this advocacy is conducted in conjunction with community
agencies and professional organisations including the Public Health
Association, the Australian Health Promotion Association, the School
Health Coalition and the Injury Control Council of WA.
